Mikron Automation division, part of the Swiss Mikron Group, opens a new factory in Kaunas, Lithuania to manufacture automation equipment for automotive industry

Today marks the official opening of Mikron Kaunas, a Lithuanian branch of the Swiss company Mikron Group. Mikron Automation business division engineers and produces industrial automation systems for the global automotive component industry. The company already employs 15 people with the plan to recruit up to 50 specialists in the nearest few years.

‛We are glad how quickly we settled in Lithuania. We started scouting for new locations for our expansion last September. After the great preparatory work done by Invest Lithuania and their very valuable assistance in the site-selection process, we made the decision to start up in Lithuania at the beginning of the year, and as soon as in June we produced our first automation module. Today, we are announcing our official opening. We are already working at full capacity and are looking for new team members’ - Christoph Schelzke, General Manager of Mikron Kaunas, recounts.

In Lithuania, the company engineers and manufactures industrial automation systems for automotive component industry. Most of the products made in Kaunas are currently for the European market; however, there is a long-term plan of supplying them to the company’s customers across the world. The equipment developed here is used for assembling various components for well-known car models of top-class automotive manufacturers. Majority of the equipment made in Lithuania is unique and custom designed for a particular component.  

Mikron Automation is situated on the 1,300 sq. m premises on Taikos Avenue in Kaunas, 900 sq. m of which are dedicated to the manufacturing processes, the remaining 400 – to engineering and administrative functions.

With its activities, Mikron will be significantly contributing to the growth and increased complexity of the local engineering industry,’ Elijus Čivilis, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Economy and Innovation, says.

In the mid-term company plans to hire up to 50 new employees, including broad-spectrum of highly qualified engineers, technicians and operators of CNC machines. While onboarding, the new employees will be deepening their knowledge at Mikron Berlin in Germany or other Mikron Automation locations around the world.

‘The global scale of automation is rapidly increasing. Mikron’s development and the establishment of the new division of Lithuania will help further develop and strengthen the competences in this sector and maintain a high track record in various industries,’ Mantas Katinas, General Manager of Investuok Lietuvoje, claims.

According to Mr. Schelzke, Mikron is currently searching for points of cooperation with Lithuanian universities: ‛The success of our business depends on the constant application of innovation. That is why we are collaborating with multiple universities around the world to hire professionals who will contribute to the continuous development of our innovation. We look forward to establishing such partnerships in Lithuania as well’.
